Description
The Savage Axis 2 Pro in .400 Legend (Model 32358) is the most powerful of the Axis 2 Pro rifles you’ve gone through so far, and like the .350 Legend, it’s designed specifically for straight-wall cartridge hunting. That matters if you’re in a state with those regulations, but even outside of that, the .400 Legend is built to deliver noticeably more energy on target than .350 while still staying within moderate recoil levels.
This rifle uses a 20-inch barrel, which fits the role perfectly. The .400 Legend is not a long-range cartridge—it’s optimized for efficiency and terminal performance inside roughly 200–250 yards—so the shorter barrel keeps the rifle compact without really hurting its intended performance. In real hunting conditions like woods, thick brush, or stands, that shorter overall length is actually an advantage.
Mechanically, it’s identical to the other Axis 2 Pro models you asked about. You get the upgraded synthetic stock with improved grip geometry, Savage’s AccuTrigger for user-adjustable pull weight, and the floating bolt head system that helps maintain consistent accuracy even on a budget platform. The Axis line is built to be simple and functional rather than refined, but it generally shoots better than its price suggests.
It is optic ready, but it does NOT come with a scope.
Like the rest of the Axis 2 Pro lineup, the receiver is drilled and tapped so you can install bases or a rail and run your own optic. It is not an XP package, so nothing is included from the factory on top.
Where this rifle really separates itself is cartridge role. Compared to what you’ve looked at:
It hits harder than .350 Legend
It has more recoil than .243 and 6.5 Creedmoor
It is not meant for long-range shooting like 6.5 Creedmoor
It is ideal for short-to-mid range deer hunting with maximum impact
There’s still relatively limited long-term data on the Axis 2 Pro platform since it’s newer, but early user discussion around .400 Legend setups suggests it’s being chosen specifically for its increased energy and effectiveness on deer within typical straight-wall distances. If you want a clean takeaway: this is the most specialized and hardest-hitting option in the group you’ve been asking about, built for close-to-mid range hunting rather than versatility or distance.
